Did you know that 50% of Americans experience some type of neuro-musculoskeletal pain during the holidays?
Whether it’s due to a chronic underlying health problem such as osteoarthritis, or the result of an ice-skating injury, it’s important you listen to your body and take the pain seriously.
When left untreated, neuro-musculoskeletal pain can interfere with your quality of life and make typically joyful occasions, like visiting with family and friends, uncomfortable or impossible.
1.) Get plenty of rest. The amount of sleep you get directly affects your energy levels and how you feel. If possible, try to get at least eight hours of sleep each night. In addition, make sure your pillow and mattress provide adequate support. If you wake up most mornings with lower back pain or a stiff neck, it may be time for an upgrade.
2.) Try to stick to a normal diet. The holiday season is filled with tempting goodies and delicious feasts. While it can be tempting to stuff yourself, doing so can have long-term consequences. This is especially true if you have a metabolic condition like diabetes or thyroid disease. It’s okay to enjoy some of your favorite treats, just do it in moderation. Consume your regular portion sizes and stop eating at least three hours before going to bed.
3.) Take time to manage stress. The holidays are stressful. Trying to find the time to go shopping, and still find time to relax can seem like a nearly impossible task. If you feel like you’re burning the candle at both ends, try and set aside some “me time.” In addition, carve out 10 to 15 minutes each day that you can dedicate to rejuvenating activities like yoga or meditation.
4.) Visit your doctor of chiropractic. Your doctor of chiropractic can make recommendations regarding exercise and nutrition. They can also provide a manual adjustment, ensuring your joints, vertebrae and bones stay properly aligned during this busy time.
